The Downingtown Area School District's oldest facility was first dedicated in 1933. Sixty-four years later, on October 10th, 2007, the doors of the building opened again for public use.The DEC was originally used as the Junior/Senior High School for Downingtown and the surrounding area. In later years, DASD used the facility as a ninth grade center. When the district opened its second high school in 2003, the building was closed. Following months of planning, cleaning and renovations, the newly named Downingtown Educational Center was rededicated once again as a district school. Alternative education classes and several district offices are housed on the third floor of the building. The Chester County Intermediate Unit has leased the remainder of the building for educational purposes.
